Dear Westport Presbies,
News In and Around the Community:
I hope you will join us for an upcoming month of events! We have a couple special speakers lined up, a musical performance I would encourage you to find the time for, some unique Service plans, plenty of food gathering opportunities, and Emily and cohorts are planning a “Choir Day” (anyone who has ever participated in a choir is welcome to join) either the last Wednesday of July or the 1st Wednesday of August, at which there will be pizza, games, hymns, etc.
Specifics below.
Summer changes:
Children’s Sunday School will adjourn for the summer starting on July 6th.
Choir is on summer break until September.
Resource center moves from Wednesdays to Fridays.
Upcoming Events:
June 29, Sunday: 5th Sunday is the last Sunday of Pride Month! Join us for a Pride Potluck after the service! We will have a special speaker, Vern Barnet, join us for our after-church gathering who will speak to us about Pride.
June 30, Monday: Westport Center for the Arts presents Nick May and Alex Li performing music from the I Exist Project at Westport Presbyterian at 6pm. I personally found the music very evocative and descriptive of the events and emotions it was written about and would encourage you all to attend. Come at 5:30 to hear a presentation from the performers!
July 2nd, Wednesday: Resource center will be closed for Independence Day week
July 3rd, Thursday: Westport Showers will be closed Independence Day week
July 4th, Friday: Church office will be closed for Independence Day
July 6th, Sunday: Join us for a worship experience that will feel a little bit different. The discussion group has been reading Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Idiot this summer. This led to the idea of creating a unique experience – drawing on Eastern Orthodox/Russian theology, liturgy, iconography and art. The goal is to playfully learn from another tradition – enriching our own American spirituality by welcoming the wisdom of Eastern Orthodox traditions. (We will also be up front about our worries about dangerous and unwarranted Russian political aggression under Putin).
July 8th, Tuesday: Happy Hour at Harpo’s at 5:30
July 13th, Sunday: Hazel Krebs (Author of Enthusiastically Me) will be leading our worship service on July 13th.
After the service, join us at Jerusalem Cafe for lunch!
July 20th, Sunday: after church potluck
Choir Day (anyone who has ever participated in a choir is welcome to join) will be either the last Wednesday of July or the 1st Wednesday of August, at which there will be pizza, games, hymns, etc. Await further news from Emily or my next newsletter
