WESTPORT RISING WORSHIP SERVICE
Trinity SUNDAY
May 26, 2024
WORDS OF WELCOME
PRELUDE: All Creatures of Our God and King setting by Benjamin M. Culli
OPENING SCRIPTURE: John 3: 1-8, 14-17 Jeff Kuhn, Liturgist
OPENING HYMN: Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! GTG#1
UNISON CALL TO WORSHIP: Romans 5: 1-5 (New King James Version)
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
CONGREGATIONAL HYMN: Glory Be to the Father GTG#581
CONFESSION OF OUR NEED OF GOD: Romans 8: 1-4, selected verses (NRSV)
Leader: For God has done what we, weakened by the flesh, could not do, by sending God’s own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, God condemned sin in the flesh, so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
People: For those who live according to the flesh, set their minds on things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON: Romans 8: 9-17
Leader: But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you.
ALL: So then, we are debtors to the Spirit of God. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
SUNG RESPONSE: Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing GTG#475
SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST:
Pastor: The grace, peace, love and joy of Jesus Christ be with you.
People: And also with you.
Pastor: Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.
CHORAL ANTHEM: Prayer to the Trinity Michael Bedford
UNISON PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION:
May the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable to You, O God, our rock and redeemer.
SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 27: 1, 4-5, 14 Galatians 3: 28
MESSAGE: The Love of the Cosmic Christ Includes All
CONGREGATIONAL HYMN: Now There Is No Male or Female GTG#493
WELCOMING, NEWS IN AROUND AND BEYOND THE COMMUNITY
SUNG PREPARATION FOR PRAYER: Help Us Accept Each Other GTG#754
JOYS AND CONCERNS, PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION,
THE LORD’S PRAYER (Our Creator, who art in heaven…)
INVITATION TO GIVE
OFFERTORY SOLO: Die Mai-nacht (the May Night); Johannes Brahms; Emma Witbolsfeugen, soprano
When the silvery moon glimmereth through tangled boughs,
And her slumberous light streameth athwart the brakes,
And the nightingale chanteth, sad I wander from glade to glade.
Hiding deep in the leaves listening to the turtledove cooing softly of love.
Ah! Love is not for me, fain I would hide me in shadow
And there gathereth alone some tear.
Ah! The smile of thy face, like to the rosy morn streaming into my soul, earth knoweth not of thee.
And there stealeth the lonesome tear burning down my cheek.
PENTECOST DOXOLOGY: Sing to the familiar hymn tune “OLD HUNDREDTH” (Glory to God #606)
Words by Rev Scott Myers (2019)
Praise God, the One who makes us whole!
Praise Christ — who liberates our souls!
Praise Spirit, leading us always!
Praise God, Companion of our days! Amen.
UNISON PRAYER OF DEDICATION: (by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.)
Eternal God, out of whose mind and being this great cosmic universe was born. We bless You. Help us to seek that which is high, noble and good. Help us in moments of difficult decisions. Help us to work, with renewed vigor for a warless world, a better distribution of wealth, and a worldwide family that transcends race or color or spiritual beliefs.
CLOSING HYMN: We are One in the Spirit (vs. 1-4) GTG#300
