CALL TO RETURN TO OUR SOULS
(for some people, Mother’s Day is a hard day. If it’s that way for you, feel free to substitute Dad, Grandma, Aunt, Sister, or whomever works for you!)
Pastor: Thanks, Mom!—For making us wash the dishes.
All: For teaching us to read, have manners,
Pastor: Eat something besides candy and cake
All: And keep going to school…
Pastor: And keep going and keep going—until we could actually become useful.
All: Thanks, Mom!
Pastor: For telling us not to be so miserable.
All: And not to hang around the wrong people,
Pastor: Especially when the wrong people was us!
All: Thanks, Mom, For showing us what womanhood could be.
Pastor: For giving us a deeper vision of life’s meaning
All: For saying stuff to us that made us think we were hearing it straight from the mouth of God.
Pastor: And maybe we are! We praise God!
HYMN: A Hymn for Mother’s Day (Melita)
CALL TO CONFESSION AND COMMITMENT
Pastor: God, the last thing I am is serene.
All: Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.
Pastor: God, I have been afraid, dwelled on my worries, fed my fears
All: Grant me the courage to change the things I can.
Pastor: God, I have forced solutions, acted as if there are no solutions, become lazy about thinking things through.
All: Grant me wisdom to discern what I cannot change from what I can change, especially about myself. Amen.
