Reflections on Change and Transformation

WESTPORT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH WORSHIP SERVICE
TRINITY SUNDAY
May 31, 2026

PRELUDE: For the Beauty of the Earth Conrad Kocher, arr. Mark Hayes
CALL TO WORSHIP:

One: Friends, today is Trinity Sunday.
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.
All: And also with you.
One: And as we sail into a summer of storytelling,
Let us give thanks to God for imaginative writers and weavers of tales.
All: Yes! We give thanks for the stories that shape our lives –
in Scripture and song, in novels and comics;
for stories told around fires and stories told on digital screens.
One: Now let us sing our way into imagining a new world.

OPENING HYMN:  #1 Glory to God Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!
UNISON CONFESSION OF OUR NEED OF GOD:

All: Presence, Life, Fire – God who is Three in One,
We confess that our attention is elsewhere.
We find small distractions more desirable than life itself.
We get tangled up in our own lives, unable to imagine the lives of others.
We miss the beautiful spark in others, seeking to use them for our benefit.
So we pray for mercy.
We pray for healing, guidance, and growth.
Bring us into the largeness of your three-fold life,
so that our communities might reflect the beauty that dances in yours.

ASSURANCE OF GOD’S GRACE:

One: The Holy Spirit connects us to Israel’s Sustaining Mystery and to the gentle face of Jesus from Nazareth. In the nick/name of the One we call Father, Son, and Spirit –
one God, Mother of us all – you are forgiven and loved.
All: Thanks be to God!

SUNG RESPONSE:  #544 Glory to God Bless the Lord (Sing 2x)
[Time with Young Disciples]
SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST:

One: The peace of Christ be with you.
All: And also with you.
One: Let’s share the peace of Christ with one another.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION:

One: Loving God, through the stories of Scripture, make us better storytellers.
Invite us into this great tradition of change and growth, that our lives might unfold into beauty and goodness.
All: Amen.

SCRIPTURE READING: Acts 9:1-19

One: May God bless the reading of Holy Scripture.
All: Thanks be to God.

CHORAL ANTHEM: Over My Head, I Hear Music in the Air spiritual
MESSAGE: The Apostle Paul and Silas Marner:  Reflections on Change and Transformation
CONGREGATIONAL HYMN:  #4 Glory to God Holy God, We Praise Your Name
WELCOME: News In, Around, and Beyond the Community
SUNG PREPARATION FOR PRAYER:  #469 Glory to God Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying (Sing 1x)
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE, BLESSINGS, AND THE LORD’S PRAYER:

All: Our Mother and Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERING OF OURSELVES/INVITATION TO GIVE:

One: Having heard of God’s love and grace to us all, let us give all that we are to God.
Let us give too of what we have for God’s work in the world.

There will be 4 ballot measures on the Aug 4 Ballot:

  • Amendment 1 which continues sales/use tax for soil and water conservation for state parks and historic sites.
  • Amendment 2 which requires election and training of each county assessor.
  • Amendment 4 which requires a majority in every congressional district for a citizen-led initiative petition amendment to pass. If one district fails to have a majority for an amendment, it will cause the amendment to fail.
