WESTPORT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH WORSHIP SERVICE
SEASON OF PENTECOST
September 14, 2025
PRELUDE: Beautiful Savior Thomas Keesecker
CALL TO WORSHIP: (The Way It Is, by William Stafford)
One: There’s a thread you follow. It goes among things that change. But it doesn’t change.
All: People wonder about what you are pursuing. You have to explain about the thread. But it is hard for others to see.
One: While you hold it you can’t get lost. Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die; and you suffer and get old. Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.
All: You don’t ever let go of the thread.
*OPENING HYMN (You may rise in Body or Spirit): #12 Glory to God Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
UNISON CONFESSION OF OUR NEED OF GOD:
All: Spirit of God – rambunctious and resourceful – set our hearts ablaze, kindle our world towards goodness. As we grow and develop and change – we sometimes lose the thread. Yet you remain with us – closer than our own breath – across life’s flux. Forgive us when we lose touch with your aliveness in our hearts. Forgive us when we lose track of your energy in our communities. Bring us back to breath, back to pulsing aliveness, back to joy.
ASSURANCE OF GOD’S GRACE:
One: God visits us in the humble and courageous life of Jesus. And now God is poured out as lively Spirit swimming in and between us. This is the Spirit of second chances, of forgiveness, strength, and hope!
All: Thanks be to God!
SUNG RESPONSE: #591 Glory to God Halle, Halle, Hallelujah! (refrain, sing twice)
[Kids’ Time Front of Sanctuary]
SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST:
One: The peace of Christ be with you.
All: And also with you.
One: Let’s share the peace of Christ with one another.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION:
One: Lord, send your Spirit to us as we open our lives to good news. Create in us a hunger and hope for new lives and a new world.
All: Amen.
SCRIPTURE READINGS: I Timothy 2:1-7 Romans 8:9-11
One: May God bless the reading of Holy Scripture.
All: Thanks be to God.
